SCHIZOPHRENIA

What is Schizophrenia?

As a psychiatrist I would say it is a functional disorder which is primarily
psychotic in nature. By psychotic it means the person has delusions and hallucinations.
But all delusions and hallucinations are not due to schizophrenia. As per diagnostic guidelines any patient who has following symptoms is said to be suffering from schizophrenia.
1) Thought withdrawal, thought insertion, thought broadcast.
2) Somatic passivity, delusional perception.
3) Third person discussing, running commentary hallucinations.
4) Bizarre delusion.
5) Loosening ofassociation.
6) psycho-motor retardation or agitation, catatonia.
7) Negative symptoms
8) self-absorbent attitude, aimlessness.
 Schizophrenia has following sub-types
 Paranoid schizophrenia
 Hebephrenic schizophrenia
 Catatonic schizophrenia
 Post schizophrenic depression
 Residual schizophrenia
 Simple schizophrenia
Best prognosis is paranoid and catatonic schizophrenia
